The Friends of the Ōtaki River (FOTOR) is a community group, with members from local bodies, iwi, environmental and recreational groups. 

With a solid group of 25-35 volunteers, they have been involved in a range of activities, including restoring areas of the Otaki River corridor, native tree planting, opening an information kiosk and investing in traps. They also involve a local school annually with planting.

The group meets every Wednesday at the Regional Council depot in Riverbank Road from 09:00 to 11:30.
